Applied Atmospheric Science Program Ranks in the Top 100
Atmospheric science is one of five disciplines at ECU to break the top 100 ranking of national public universities in research expenditures, according to ECU’s Vice Chancellor for Research, Economic Development, and Engagement in a report issued in January 2019. This is part of an overall trend at ECU in successful federally supported research programs. For 2018, ECU overall ranked slightly above UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State in successful research proposals to the National Science Foundation (NSF). In the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment at ECU, atmospheric science NSF-funded research includes studies of precipitation variability and intensity for the southeastern U.S. in a changing climate, and studies of coastal erosion vulnerability and human response during the monsoon season in the Ganges river basin. These programs support graduate and undergraduate student research in the intersection of climate dynamics and societal response to change.
