Geography Students Receive Lyman “Skip” Dickerson Internship Scholarship
Two students from ECU’s Department of Geography, Planning and Environment were the recipients of the Lyman “Skip” Dickerson Internship Scholarship. The internship took them to Miami, FL to work at the Miami Botanical Center.
Dylan Scheffler and David “Seth” Purvis (above) employed their GPS mapping and geospatial database development skills to catalog the location of new plant locations within the Botanical Gardens. Some areas they mapped also required surveying in conjunction with the GPS work as the large palms and cycads they were mapping were quite dense and therefore blocked the GPS signal. The surveys were used to triangulate the plant locations to accurately map their locations. These data were input ArcGIS (below) to enhance existing and build on work of 4 previous ECU students who were past recipients of the Lyman“Skip” Dickerson Internship Scholarship.
