Scholarships & Awards

All ECU scholarships, including those listed below, require an electronic application submission through the ECUAward portal. Please visit the Office of University Scholarships for details on how to apply for any of the awards below as well as how the ECUAwards portal will also match you to additional opportunities.

Deadline: The deadline for receipt of all materials through ECUAward is January 15.

The Geography Scholarship ($500)

The Geography Scholarship is awarded to a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in any of the degree offerings in the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment.

Eligibility:

  • Pursuing a BS in any of the degree offerings in Geography, Planning, and Environment
  • Full-time sophomore, junior, or senior
  • Minimum major GPA: 3.0
  • Minimum cumulative GPA: 2.5

Application Materials:

  • One-page statement of your short-term and long-term career goals (5 and 10 year goals).
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member within your major who can speak to your skills, abilities, activities, and/or community involvement. You should make sure the reference provider is willing to provide you a reference letter and then let them know to expect an email invitation to provide the reference. It is your responsibility to make sure they file the letter prior to the scholarship deadline.

Robert E. and Margeryfay R. Cramer Scholarship ($750)

The Cramer Scholarship is awarded to a Geography major or minor who is planning to study abroad during the academic semester(s) or summer term(s). In the event no relevant East Carolina study abroad program is offered, the scholarship may be used for a comparable study program sponsored by an accredited college or university, with the provision that the credits earned will be transferred to the student’s East Carolina University transcript. Independent international study or group travel without university structured classes, even though university credit may be earned, does not qualify. A “class-travel” program is meant to be one in which formal classes are taught at a foreign site during most of the program. The student must be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited study abroad program.

Eligibility:

  • Pursuing a BS in Geography or a Geography minor
  • Full-time sophomore, junior, or senior
  • Minimum cumulative GPA: 2.5

Application Materials:

  • Online Application Form: Select the term of your proposed trip
  • Online Application Form: Describe how this study abroad experience fits into your personal, professional, and academic goals (Minimum 200 words – Maximum 500 words).
  • One-page statement of your study abroad plan.
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member within your major in the Department of Geography, Planning, and Environment who can speak to your skills, abilities, activities, and/or community involvement. Planning Program Scholarships & Awards

The Community and Regional Planning program has multiple scholarships that are competitively awarded to undergraduate students majoring in planning. Visit ECU Community and Regional Planning Scholarships and Awards for further details.

East Carolina Alumni Association Scholarships ($1,000-$2,500)

Competitively awarded to an undergraduate student who is currently enrolled at East Carolina University as a full-time undergraduate. Scholarship applications are evaluated based on demonstrated leadership, service/volunteerism, and recommendation. Visit the ECU Alumni Scholarship Program for further details.

Eligibility:

  • Full-time ECU undergraduate including freshman
  • Minimum cumulative GPA: 3.0

Application Materials:

  • One letter of recommendation that speaks to the applicant’s involvement in university/ community-related extracurricular activities or employment

The Willoughby Foster “Red” & Ann Ratledge Young Scholarship

This Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences scholarship is open to students within any of the majors housed in this college. Recipient must demonstrate significant financial need and have a projected minimum GPA of at least 3.0.

Eligibility:

  • Full-time ECU undergraduate including first year students
  • Pursuing a major in the college
  • Demonstrates financial need
  • Minimum cumulative GPA: 3.0

Application Materials:

  • Are you currently employed or were you previously employed by a program/department in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences?
  • If yes, please list your position(s) and supervisor’s name(s).
