Research

Areas of Interest: Human impact on environmental systems, GISciences, Remote Sensing, Spatial Cognition, Environmental Changes

Dr. Presotto’s work is inherently interdisciplinary, situated at the intersection of Geography, Environmental Studies and Sciences, Spatial Cognition, Geospatial Data Analysis, and Conservation. Her projects are driven by designs rooted in Geographic Information Science (GIScience), Remote Sensing, and primary data. Human activities have significantly influenced the spatial behavior of many species, posing risks to both animal space use and human populations. As interactions between humans and non-human species increase, we are likely to face more environmental challenges, including the emergence or re-emergence of diseases and restrictions on species movement. Anthropogenic actions that alter the environment—such as agricultural practices like monoculture farming, deforestation, and the expansion of human populations into natural areas—affect the Earth on a global scale. Dr. Presotto’s research focuses on understanding the effects of environmental changes on natural systems. Her current projects aim to 1) promote coexistence and One Health in human-modified habitats, particularly in coastal environments, and 2) map the Landscape of Fear (LOF) for both humans and non-human species. LOF refers to the spatial variation in an organism’s perception of risk, which causes environmental adaptations over the individual’s lifetime.

Dr. Presotto’s work appears in various peer-reviewed journals such as Animal Behavior, Animal Cognition, iScience, Current Biology, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, the International Journal of Primatology, PLOS One. Her research has been funded by The Explorers Club, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institute of Health. Dr. Presotto’s work has being featured on significant media vehicles, such as the New York Times, ESRI ArcGIS News, and in National Geographic Magazine, Italy.
